JUST A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT ALLA THESE DAMNED HURRICANES

When I awoke this morning, I checked out the news on the BBC, and was greeted with quite a sight. The exodus from the gulf coast, in anticipation of Rita landfall is without a doubt, the greatest mass-mobilization of citizenry this country has ever seen (correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't seem to recall another situation in which over a million people have been issued a mandatory evacuation order, in this country.) Add to this, the displaced people from the Katrina disaster which are being moved from their temporary shelters, further inland. I'd not be surprised to learn that over two million are scurrying for cover, at this hour.

The scenes on the freeways leading out of the threatened areas look like a linear superdome, with suffering, gridlock, and people expiring by the roadside. The only difference is, this time around, is that federal assistance is slightly more visible (the governor of Texas is a republican, after all.)

As one of the few republicans with whom I still maintain a passing acquaintence recently said: "Gee- we humans like to think we can screw things up- but time after time, nature teaches us who the real bastard is"

Now- I spend a tad too much time, monitoring the "christian" conservative right in this country, than is good for me, and It was only predictable, in the wake of Katrina, that these slimeballs would start saying that the storm was God's Judgement" for the "Sin" that runs rife through New Orleans. Naturally, in making this assertion, these walking feces ignore the thousands killed, displaced, and left homeless, in the neighboring states of Alabama and Mississippi, but one grows used to idiocy, when listening to these morons.

Now- for just one second, I'm going to take on this twisted line of thinking, and ask, supposing, for the time being, that, indeed, that these storms are, indeed, "The Punishment of God".

Notice that all these storms are hitting states that have gone republican, for the past few elections? Perhaps, this is God's punishment, for these states' republican tendencies.

Notice that these storms are hitting the areas, most integral to the oil processing/refining industries? Let's assume, for a moment, that this is God's punishment, for us having an infrastructure so heavilly based upon fossil fuels.

Similarly, these states are the places where the racial and economic divide are widest- maybe this is God's warning, that we should forge a more just and equitable society...

Lastly: Massachusetts has just pretty much institutionalized gay marriage- how come Boston hasn't been hit, yet?

Just a few thoughts...

See you on Sunday...
